Let them eat cake

One thing you have to get right at any event is the food. People always remember if the food was bad or the cake was dry. So we made sure to emphasize to our wedding planning team that we had high expectations for the items on our menu. Cake included.

When it was time to choose our cake we knew we wanted to tie it into the tropical theme of our wedding. With the amount of people that we were expecting for our reception, the resort upgraded our cake from two tiers to three tiers. We were given a number of flavors to choose from including chocolate, carrot, red velvet, vanilla, and lemon. How can you choose between such great flavors? We landed on vanilla for the top and bottom layer and red velvet for the center. I’ve never met a person who didn’t love red velvet cake and of course vanilla was the “safe” choice just in case.

Since our destination wedding was in Montego Bay, Jamaica we only did one site visit several months prior to our wedding day. We did not have the opportunity to do a cake tasting. Although, I would highly recommend building that into your site visit if possible. When we visited Hyatt Ziva, we had 2 other appointments the same day which left no time for those types of details.

During the actual panning phase, our coordinator asked for our cake inspiration. Another decision to make out of the hundreds. Pinterest had been our best friend up until this point to it only made sense to look there.

We searched for “tropical wedding cake”, “modern wedding cake”, and “ 3 tier wedding cake”. They all produced really unique options. One pin in particular stood out and went really well with the tropical theme we landed on. We added the pin to the collection of other wedding ideas we sent over and prayed they’d get it right. And they did!

Not only was the cake beautiful but it taste delicious too. Thank you to the Hyatt Ziva catering team for executing our menu so well.
