Embrace the unplanned

Ibiza, Spain

The notion of embarking on a spontaneous honeymoon, devoid of meticulous planning, had an irresistible charm that resonated deeply with our sense of adventure and romance. While I understand the merits of well-organized trips, there's an undeniable allure in embracing the unknown and venturing into an unplanned escapade with my new husband. Here's why I firmly advocate for a spontaneous honeymoon without the constraints of meticulous advance planning now that we’ve survived it.

Above all, spontaneity injects a rush of excitement into the journey. Although, this can be anxiety triggering for some. The prospect of setting off without clear destinations, the uncharted places we'll discover, and the shared experiences we'll accumulate enhanced the magic of our relationship. It encouraged us to rely on each other's company and resourcefulness, forging an even stronger bond as we navigated through the unfamiliar together.

Amalfi, Italy

Our spontaneous honeymoon offered a welcome respite from the often stressful realm of wedding preparations. We already had a lot of decisions to make just to make it to the altar. Liberated from the need to meticulously curate itineraries and secure reservations, we were free to wholly immerse ourselves in the present moment. However you do need to start with destination #1. For us this was Barcelona, Spain. A city brand new to the both of us. From there the possibilities were endless.

Serendipity plays an integral role in spontaneous travel. The unpredicted twists and turns frequently lead to the most cherished memories like figuring out if we missed the last train back to our hotel or discovering a monument you’ve read about as a child. These unforeseen encounters granted us an authentic and distinctive perspective of each destination.

Milan, Italy

The financial aspect of a spontaneous honeymoon offers unexpected liberation. While adhering to a budget is essential, not having every cent accounted for can unveil delightful surprises. I do realize this is a privilege, especially after paying for a wedding. However you might chance upon unbeatable deals on accommodations (Italy was surprisingly affordable) or stumble upon budget-friendly yet delectable local eateries. This financial flexibility empowered us to allocate resources where they truly count – crafting unforgettable moments. We also saved a lot of money using Delta Skymiles for our larger segments between continents and low cost flights in between European cities.

To some, undertaking a spontaneous honeymoon might signify recklessness. We did conduct some preliminary research on the general climate, any visa requirements, and packing essentials for potential destinations since we had to pack for multiple countries. Ensuring we possess vital documents like passports and identification is, of course, a priority. Luckily for us we had at least 3 weeks off of work for our honeymoon so we could be flexible with home much time we stayed in each city depending on how much we loved it.

In a world often saturated with meticulous planning, embracing the allure of a spontaneous honeymoon offers a breath of fresh air. It beckons us to live in the present, relish each other's company, and embrace the unanticipated marvels of the world. Thus, if the prospect of embarking on an adventure without a meticulously charted course resonates with us, the world of spontaneity eagerly awaits to be explored during our post-wedding getaway.
